    Day 1

    Departure

Please be ready by 9:45 AM at your Hotel for a prompt departure at 10:00 AM.

Short drive to Nis Fortress situated along the shore of the Nisava River. It is one of the best-preserved and most beautiful medieval fortresses in central Balkan. It was ruined and restored several times, by the Romans, over the Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgarians, and Serbs. It's assumed final shape in 1723 when Turks built it, facing the end of their reign. Many cultural events take place on the open stage of the Fortress like Nisville Jazz Festival and Nis Film Festival of Actors' Achievements.

After visiting the Fortress, around 10 minutes' drive to Skull Tower, the unique monument in the world which is a stone structure embedded with human skulls. It was constructed following the Battle of Cegar in May 1809, during the First Serbian Uprising. Knowing that he and his fighters would be impaled if captured, Serbian commander Stevan Sindjelic detonated a powder magazine within the rebel entrenchment, killing himself, his fellow rebels and the encroaching Ottoman soldiers. Vizier Hurshid Pasha ordered building a tower from the skulls of the fallen rebels as a warning to potential future rebels.

Short drive to the archaeological site from the 4th century, called Mediana. It was a palace and summer home of Constantine the Great and the proof of wealth and glory of the Roman city of Naissus, where he was born. In the year 313, he issued the Milan Edict, introducing Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire. Especially attractive are marble sculptures: God of Water, Mosaics of Medusa, decorative columns, heated baths-thermae, and water supply system.

The sightseeing continues to Memorial Museum of World War II – The Crveni Krst Concentration Camp (lit. Red Cross Concentration Camp). It is one of a few authentic Nazi camps in Europe where more than 10,000 people were killed. After the war, a memorial to the victims of the camp was erected on Mount Bubanj, where many inmates, families, and children were shot. It was established by the Gestapo in 1941 and liberated by partisans on 14 October 1944.

The final stop is at The National Museum of Nis that keeps more than 40.000 objects in six different collections history, coins-medals and epigraphs, literary heritage, archaeology, ethnology and history of art. This place is must-see for a better understanding of Nis through centuries and all visited places on this city tour.
