The territory of today Serbia is rich in Thermo mineral medicinal springs known and used in the distant past. Back in ancient times, the ancient Romans built baths, swimming pools, and most of them to cure injuries of the legionnaires after the battles. Niska Banja has mentioned for the first time in 362, although it has known that Romans used these thermal springs in the 2nd century.
The water catchment system that they built on the mainspring, still serves well, more than 15 centuries later. The Roman Naisus, a town built on the banks of the Nisava River, had a water supply system coming from Niska Banja and was connected through the ceramic pipes. In the 5th century, during the Great Migration, known as the great migration and change of the demographic map, a good part of the then known world, Attila Hun, ravaged Niska Banja, as evidenced by the preserved data. The period that followed the spa was sent to the shadow, after several centuries, more precisely, during the late Middle Ages, we would meet again in 1521, during the hike of Suleiman the Magnificent to Belgrade. At that time, this great Turkish ruler spent some time in Niska Banja on his way to Belgrade and Vienna.
By the mid-18th century, Niska Banja had become a landscaped settlement with baths of cold and hot mineral water. During the fourth decade of the 20th century, Niska Banja becomes a famous Spa in Europe, adapting its growth and development to trends, becoming a popular holiday destination for politicians, wealthy merchants, manufacturers, and the common people. Within the Niska Banja, there is the King's Villa,where King Aleksandar Karadjordjevic had stayed very often.
Niska Banja is located in the southeast of Serbia. It is only 9 km away from Nis and 250 km away from Belgrade. It is very close to the high Corridor X that connects Nis-Sofia (Bulgaria) and Istanbul Turkey. Above the Spa, a beautiful hill Koritnik rises up to 808 meters, where starts the ridge of the Suva Planina (Dry Mountain) and famous Sky Running Trail Sokolov Put (eng. the Hawk Way). This trail passes three picks on the ridge, Crni Kamen (Black Stone) 984 m, Sokolov Kamen (eng. Hawk Stone) 920 m, and the highest pick Trem 1810 m. Koritnik is a favorite spot for Paragliding Europian Cup already held many times here. Tourists also recognize this spot for Tandem flights while enjoying the fabulous view of the city of Nis.
